In the 1450s, Sultan Mehmet II encouraged immigrants to settle in his newly conquered Constantinople. Jews from Greece, Portugal, and Spain were all welcomed to the city and many began forming communities around the area known today as Galata. Discover the rich history of Jewish life in this neighborhood with a knowledgeable local guide on this 4 hour tour. Visit some of the important sites of the Jewish quarter.

Museum of Jewish Turks was created in 2001 to celebrate the 500 year anniversary of the Sephardic Jews living in the Ottoman Empire. Inside the museum, you will find a collection of videos, sound recordings, objects, and photographs documenting the history of Jews in Turkey. Visitors must have a photo ID in order to enter the building. It has recently moved to a new location inside of the Nev Shalom Temple.

Neve Shalom Synagogue comes from the name
"Oasis of Peace" and was built in the 1940s when the Jewish
population of the Galata neighborhood was booming. This synagogue's dome was
built in mind for the impressive glass chandelier in the main room. On two
separate occasions this synagogue was targeted by terrorist attacks, yet the
structure remains in perfect shape.

Ashkenazi Synagogue was built in 1909 by
Ashkenazi (European) Jews from Austria close to the Galata Tower. Inside, it
features a grand chandelier from Vienna and its design has characteristics
borrowed from Ottoman architecture.

Schneidertempel was built in 1894 by The Jewish Tailor Association, a group of Ashkenazi Jews who the name "Schneider" (meaning Tailor) comes from. Formerly a temple, it now serves as an art gallery with rotating exhibitions.

You will also visit the outside of the Italian Synagogue, Jewish Apartments,
and Kamondo Buildings.
