Rumkale

Rumkale was once a riverside fortress on the Euphrates, today the fortress sits on the side of a small lake this is due to the dam that was built on the river. The strategic location of the fortress led to it being controlled by different groups, one of the leading was the Byzantium, however, the structure is mostly Hellenistic and Roman originally. Armenian warlords also took control thanks to its location. During some of the more peaceful times it as the seat of power for an Armenia Bishop, during this period there was also a convening of church officials commonly known as a synod.

Today the Fortress is now located on the body of water across a peninsula that was created by the build of the Birecik Dam. The fortress can be accessed by boat from the ancient site of Zeugma.
