Quinn's Post

Quinn's Post was originally a New Zealand machine gun position, established on the 25th of April 1915, the same day that the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at Anzac's Cove and the Battle of Gallipoli began. The post was taken over by Australian forces on the 26th of April and was repeatedly attacked by the 57th regiment of the Turkish army. Quinn's post became known as the single most dangerous place of the battlefields; it was the most advanced ANZAC post, key to both the Monash and Shrapnel Valley and potential access point to ANZAC's central position. Quinn's post was known among Turkish soldiers as Bomba Sirt (Bomb Ridge).

Quinn's Post was named in memory of Captain Hugh Quinn, an Australian officer of the 15th Battalion. The respected Captain commanded the position but on the 29th of May 1915, Quinn was killed in the battle when Turkish troops temporarily gained access the post. The officer was later buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery. Quinn's post was handed back to the New Zealand Infantry in June 1915 but was subsequently occupied by the Australian Light Horse Brigade and the Australian 17th Battalion until heavy loses persuaded the ANZAC forces to retreat to their ships in October that same year.

Quinn's Post Cemetery overlooks the Australian Lone Pine Memorial and covers 1,283 square yards. The graves of both Australian and New Zealand soldiers can be found here as well as the graves of 294 unidentified soldiers. The cemetery is one of a series of burial grounds and memorials scattered across the Gallipoli Peninsula many of which are included on Gallipoli Day Tours from Canakkale or Istanbul. Quinn's post lies east of Anzac Village, on the eastern side of the peninsula, on the Aegean Sea. It is frequently visited by descendants of those who fought and lost their lives in the battle. The region can become very busy especially around Anzac Day (25th April) when visitors stay in the nearby towns of Eceabat or Canakkale and gather for the remembrance ceremonies.
