KALEKOY / SIMENA CASTLE

SIMENA CASTLE - KALEKOY

Kalekoy is located on the Mediterranean coast between Kas and Demre.  In ancient Lycian times the town was known as Simena.  Access is only possible by sea.  This popular yachting destination sits admist a Lycian necropolis, which is partially sunken.  Kalekoy sits below crenulated ramparts of a small Byzantine castle on the hill, which was originally built to combat pirates in Kekova.  The castle has a small theatre, which is cut into the rock and seats around 300 people, the smallest amongst all Lycian cities.  From the castle the views are amazing, facing both the Mediterranean and Kekova Island.  On the west side of the theatre there are rock tombs scattered, with a Roman wall made of stone.  At the base of the harbour, there are restaurants offering daily seafood catches.  There is also a sarcophagus in the water.
