TOUR DETAILS
NORTH CAPPADOCIA TOUR – FIRST DAY PROGRAMME

R
OSE VALLEY (KIZILCUKUR)
The Rose Valley is an isolated valley behind Urgup. It has beautiful rock formations with some great hidden rock – carved churches. The most interesting part of this area is the countless tracks connecting the small villages and towns through vineyards and gardens like a spider net. It is always possible to see villagers working in the area and offering grapes, apples or apricots to you.

CAVUSIN
One of the oldest settlements in the area, Cavusin is situated 2km from Goreme, on the Goreme – Avanos road. The Church of St. John the Baptist offers a panoramic view of the village. This church and its paintings date back to the 5th century, making it the oldest church in the region. It had a large courtyard which is unusual for Cappadocia. However this has eroded away.

MONKS VALLEY (PASABAGLARI)
The best place to see three-headed fairy chimneys. Pasabag, the Pasha’s Vineyard is surrounded by incredible natural rock formations; a spectacular scene.

AVANOS
A centre for terracotta works of art since 3000BC, it is a town where you will be invited to visit a traditional pottery workshop set deep into the hillside. The clay, from the Red River passing through the town gives life both to the land and to the local economy.

UCHISAR
Uchisar is a troglodyte town situated right in the middle of Cappadoccia. It is named after the enormous piece of rock in the centre of the town, which was once used as a castle. This extraordinary rock is the highest peak of the area with a view of whole of Cappadocia and Erciyes (Argeus) Mountain.

OPEN AIR MUSEUM
Goreme, an important Christian centre in the early years of the middle ages, was a bishopric administered by Mokissos near Aksaray in the 11th and 13th Centuries. Despite the vast number of monasteries, churches and chapels in the vicinity of Goreme there are not many inscriptions bearing dates. For this reason these religious buildings are mainly dated according to the iconography or architectural features.

DEVRENT VALLEY
Devrent Valley is situated on the Northern slopes of Aktepe, 1km from Pasabaglari (monk’s valley) and 5km from Avanos. The ruins at Devrent Valley are spread over three valleys which also house several pointed fairy chimneys with large stems.

SOUTH CAPPADOCIA TOUR – SECOND DAY PROGRAMME
Ihlara Valley Tour

GOREME ESENTEPE (PANAROMIC VIEW)
The magnificent landscape around Göreme has been formed from its solidified lava streams, its ash and tuff stone, all dating from the Neocene period. A result of thousands of years of continual erosion makes this area look like a lunar landscape. The fairy chimneys also have a great colour variety. There are light and dark colours from white to yellow, pink, grey and black.

DERINKUYU UNDERGROUND CITY
Derinkuyu is situated 29km from Nevsehir, on the road to Nigde. The city is approximately 85m deep.  It contains all the usual rooms found in an underground city (stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, wineries etc). Apart from these, a large room with a barrel vaulted ceiling on the second floor was a missionary school, the rooms to the left being study rooms. From the 3rd and 4th floors onwards the descent is by way of vertical staircases, which lead to a cruciform plan church on the lowest floor. The 55m deep ventilation shaft was also used as a well. Not every floor was provided with surface access in order to protect the dwellers from poisoning during raids. Derinkuyu Underground City was opened to visitors in 1965 but so far only 10% can be visited.

IHLARA VALLEY - TREK
Early Christians have constructed their rock houses and temples by carving the tuffs in the valley of Ihlara, through the valley runs the Melendiz River. The waters of the river are named Ihlara as Peristrema meaning "The people of circulating waters". To search the source of the water in Ihlara, is in fact trying to reveal the meaning of life. It takes 2 1/2hrs to walk from the Ihlara Vadsisi Turistik Tesisleri to Belisirma and about 3hrs to walk from Belisirma to Selime.

BELISIRMA AND LUNCH
After walking through Ihlara Valley you will be driven to Belisirma for a smorgasbord lunch, a mixture of Turkish and Western food including dessert.

SELIME MONASTRY
Selime Monastery is an astonishing rock cut structure incorporating a vast kitchen and soaring chimney, a church with a gallery all around it, stables with feeding troughs and other evidence of the troglodyte lifestyle.

PIGEON VALLEY
You will stop on the outskirts of Goreme village and look down into Pigeon Valley to see the centuries old pigeon houses carved from the cliffs. Throughout the years farmers have used pigeon manure as a rich source of fertiliser for their crops.
