Kos is an island 4km off the coast of Bodrum. It has very rich volcanic soil due to the Aegean Arc (a row of inactive volcanos off the coast of Kos) and a population of approximately 31,000 people. Kos is where Hippocrates was born around 460 BCE. Hippocrates came up with medical concepts that are used in western medicine even today and was the founder Hippocratic School of Medicine in Kos city. About 4 Km from Kos city is the Sanctuary of Asklepios which dates back to 4th century BCE. Constructed after the death of Hippocrates the Sanctuary of Asklepios was dedicated to the god of medicine, Asklepios, and was a place for the sick and injured to gather, where priests/physicians would treat them. In ancient times Kos was well-known for its wealth and its settlements and of course for Hippocrates and his medical school which had become the most renowned medical facility in the Roman Empire.
